Columbia County Hazard Mitigation Planning Update

Columbia County is currently updating the County Multi-jurisdiction Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) and holding a public meeting to address Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) public outreach requirements.

The Multi-Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan is a FEMA prescribed effort which enables the County to obtain Federal Grants for planning and mitigation projects. The purpose of the Multi- Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) is to identify and profile the County’s risk and vulnerability to potential natural hazards, including all municipalities/jurisidictions within the County. Specifically, this plan assesses the potential impacts of hurricanes, winter storms, extreme precipitation and flooding, earthquakes, drought/wildfire, and dam/culvert failure. Properties, resources, and critical facilities which may be impacted by natural hazard events are identified throughout the HMP process. The plan will include mitigation strategies and actions aimed at reducing the loss of or damage to life, property, infrastructure, and natural, cultural, and economic resources.  A virtual presentation on the HMP planning process and natural hazard risk assessment results will be held on April 16th at 6 – 8 PM. This presentation will explain the scope of the grant work, review and the risk and vulnerability of Columbia County facilities, infrastructure, vulnerable populations, and resources to natural hazards impacts within and discuss next steps to identifying mitigation actions to make the County and its jurisdictions more resilient to these impacts. There will be an opportunity for public input and questions after the virtual presentation.
